What do the red brackets or red bars surrounding the McAfee VirusScan shield icon signify?

Red brackets or red bars surrounding the VirusScan system tray shield icon signify that one of VirusScan's rules have been broken. This may indicate one of the following situations:
-- A virus has been detected and cleaned
-- A file action has been blocked
-- An access protection rule has been broken

To get rid of the red brackets, do the following:
1. Right-Click on the VirusScan tray icon in the system tray.
2. Look for and click on one of the following menu items:
-- 'on access scan messages' (if it was a virus)
-- 'access protection log' (if it was an access protection rule)
3. A window will open and display the last thing that was reported.

Once you have accessed the log the red brackets should go away until the next incident.
