Email, Bounceback messages, What do I do when I get a bounceback message claiming the email address does not exist or that the address is invalid?

I received bounceback emails saying that the email addresses don't exist or are invalid.

If you are getting bounceback messages claiming that an University email address does not exist, the most likely reasons for this situation are the following:

1. The person has left the university and after the alloted time, the account was disabled and/or deleted. In this case, the bounceback should say "recipient has left the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign"

2. The email address you were given is incorrect. Contact the person you are attempting to email for the correct address or attempt to look them up on the online phonebook: http://illinois.edu/ds/search

3. The email address could have also been entered incorrectly, check for the following errors:
a. Check that the netid or first part of the email address is spelled correctly.
b. Check that 'illinois' is spelled correctly.
c. Check that the 'edu' is spelled correctly.
d. Make sure that the email address follows the format of netid@illinois.edu

The email address should not have any extra characters such as an additional period '.' or a space at the end of the email address.
