The table describes the user roles in Illinois Compass 2g:
Roles |
Illinois Compass 2g (powered by Blackboard Learn) |
Student |
Student is the default course user role. A user with the role of Student has no access to the course Control Panel or editing permissions for the course Content. |
Instructor |
Instructors have full access to the course Control Panel. This role is generally assigned to the person developing, teaching, or facilitating the class. If a course is unavailable to students, users with the Instructor role may still access it. The instructor is included in the course description in the Course List. The space requestor is given this role when the course shell is first built. See this link for details on how to request a new course space: Compass Space Request |
Teaching Assistant |
Users with the Teaching Assistant (TA) role have access to most of the course Control Panel. If the course is unavailable to students, teaching assistants may still access the course. The teaching assistant is not included in the course description in the Course List. Teaching assistants cannot remove an instructor from a course nor can they change roles or availability of users in the course. They can enroll students and un-enroll anyone who is not an instructor. |
Course Administrator |
Course Administrators have full access to the course Control Panel. This role is generally assigned to the person developing or facilitating the class. Course Administrators can batch enroll users in a course. You can only enroll users who are already in the U of I Active Directory. Requires that you make a .CSV file with NetID, First Name, Last Name and optionally an email address, (in that exact order) one account per line. If a course is unavailable to students, users with the Course Administrator role may still access it. The Course Administrator is not included in the course description as an instructor in the Course List. Course Administrators cannot modify or create Blackboard Collaborate Ultra sessions. Course Administrators join Blackboard Collaborate Ultra sessions as a Participant. |
Course Builder |
The Course Builder role has access to most areas of the course or organization Control Panel that the TA has except enrollment and grading functions. This role is appropriate for an assistant who should not have access to student grades or the ability to affect enrollments. If the course is unavailable to students, a course builder can still access the course. The course builder cannot remove an instructor from a course. |
Grader |
The Grader role has limited access to the course Control Panel. Graders can assist an instructor in the creation, management, delivery, and grading of assessments and surveys. The grader may also assist an instructor with adding manual entries to the Grade Center. When the course is unavailable to students, the Grader cannot access the course. |
Temporary Guest Account | Unauthenticated Guest access is not allowed within Illinois Compass. If a department needs to allow users outside of the Urbana campus, please refer to this article: Requesting Guest Access |
Program Staff | Users with Program Staff role have access to most of the course Control Panel, with two exceptions. They can view but cannot edit course content. They can view course enrollments but cannot make changes to those enrollments. Program staff have access to the grade center, with the ability to view grades and make changes. This role is designed for departments where the program staff monitors activity and progress within a course, but relies on an instructional design team to design and make changes to a course. If the course is unavailable to students, program staff may still access the course. |
Discussion Assistant | The Discussion Assistant role has limited access to the course Control Panel. They can view course content, but cannot edit course content. They do not have access to student grades or the ability to affect enrollments. Discussion Assistants can view, delete, post and reply to threads in the discussion boards. A staff badge icon appears next to their name when posting or replying. This role is designed for users that need to help with course discussions, but do little else in the course. If the course is unavailable to students, discussion assistants may still access the course. |
Facilitator | This course role contains a set of default privileges regarding course calendar, discussions, gradebook, announcements, materials, and groups. Course members can be granted this role to help maintain the pace of the course throughout the term or as needed. |
