Email, Google Apps @ Illinois, Using Microsoft Outlook 2010/2013/2016

This page describes how to set up Outlook 2010 or 2013 for use with your Google Apps @ Illinois email account.

Enable Allow Less Secure Apps

  1. Log in to the Google Apps @ Illinois web interface at http://g.illinois.edu.
  2. Click your "initial" in the upper right hand corner and select 'my account'
  3. Under Sign-in & Security click Connected apps & sites
  4. Find the section that says "Allow less secure apps" and make sure it is on.

Enable IMAP access to your Google Apps @ Illinois account

  1. Log in to the Google Apps @ Illinois web interface at http://g.illinois.edu.
  2. (If this is your first time logging in:) Select your preferred language and accept the terms of service.
  3. Near your NetID at the top right of the screen, click the Settings link.
  4. In the Settings window, click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP link.
  5. In the IMAP Access section, select Enable IMAP.
  6. Click the Save Changes button.

Set a Google Apps @ Illinois POP/IMAP password

  1. Log in to the Partner Computing Password site using your NetID and Active Directory password.
  2. In Type a password and Confirm the password fields, enter your chosen Google Apps @ Illinois password.
  3. Click the Set Password button.
  4. Log out of the Partner Computing Password site.

You will see a screen that says that your password has been set. You now have a password that will allow you to access Google Apps @ Illinois email from clients other than the web interface.

Add your Google Apps @ Illinois account to Outlook

  1. Under Outlook's Tools menu, select Account Settings...
  2. Under the Email tab, click the New... button.
  3. Choose the Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP option.
  4. Click the Manually configure server settings or additional server types box. Click Next.
  5. Select the Internet E-mail option and click Next.
  6. Enter the following:
    Google Apps Outlook settings
    • Your name: Your full name (as you want it to appear)
    • Email address: yournetid@illinois.edu
    • Account type: IMAP
    • Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
    • Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
    • User name: yournetid@illinois.edu
    • Password: Your Google Apps @ Illinois password
    • Remember password: Checked
    • Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA): Checked
    • Click the More Settings button.
      Google Apps Outlook More Settings
      • Under the Outgoing Mail Server tab, check My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication.
      • Choose Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
      • Under the Advanced tab, enter:
        • Incoming server (IMAP): 993
        • Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL (You might have to select SSL/TLS)
        • Ougoing server (SMTP): 587
        • Use the following type of encrypted connection: TLS (You might have to select STARTTLS)
        • Click OK to return to the Add New Email Account window.
    • Click the Test Account Settings button. If an error is reported, double-check your typing the settings listed above. If both tests succeed, click the Next button.
  7. Once you've successfully entered all your account information, a congratulations window will appear. Click Finish.
  8. Your Google Apps @ Illinois account should now appear in the list of accounts in the Account Setting window, and also in your Mail Folders list in Outlook.
