Email, Google Apps @ Illinois, Access Your Google Email

This page describes how to access your Google hosted email from the web or a desktop or mobile client.

Users of Google Apps at Illinois Gmail have several options to access their email from the web, mobile, or desktop clients.


The Gmail website is the best way to use your Google Apps @ Illinois email account.

Your Gmail can be accessed via web browser at

Supported browser are listed at Gmail Help: Supported browsers . Google requires cookies and Javascript be enabled.


  1. Go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords > Add Account
  2. Choose Google from the list of provider and enter your email address
  3. Complete the login process to authorize

  1. Download or update to the lastest version of the Gmail app
  2. Open the Gmail app and tap the Menu icon in the top left
  3. To the right of your username, tap the Down arrow
  4. Tap Add Account
  5. Choose Google as the account type and provide your email address
  6. Complete the login process to authorize

  1. If you haven’t already setup an email account, you’re prompted to set it up when you first open
  2. Otherwise, in the Mail menu, choose Add Account.
  3. Choose Google from the list of providers and enter your email address
  4. Complete the login process to authorize

Outlook 2016 and Window 10 Mail app

We do not recommend using Outlook 2016 or Windows 10 Mail app as your client for Google Apps @ Illinois Gmail account access due to security concerns.

Older versions of Outlook have reached the end of maintsream support from Microsoft and are not recommended for use with Google Apps @ Illinois.

Advanced: IMAP configuration

This method is not recommend as it is less secure than using the web or other clients mentioned above.

You must set a Google Apps @ Illinois IMAP password via the Partner Computing website.

  1. Log in to the Partner Computing Password site using your NetID and Active Directory password.
  2. In Type a password and Confirm the password fields, enter your chosen Google Apps @ Illinois password.
  3. Click the Set Password button.
  4. Log out of the Partner Computing Password site.

You must enable Less Secure Access before configuring your Gmail account for IMAP access. This step must be followed to use Gmail with IMAP. See Gmail Help: Let less secure apps access your account .
