This page contains the answers to some frequently asked questions about Contacts Database, a web application which keeps a record of who is responsible for networks, domains, services, systems and devices throughout the Urbana campus.
What is the Contacts Database (CDB) service?
Contacts Database (CDB) is a replacement for the legacy Contact Manager which ran on the old ARS platform. CDB keeps a record of who is responsible for networks, domains, services, systems and devices throughout the Urbana campus.
How do I access CDB?
Your NetID and AD password are used to authenticate you to the new CDB system located at https://cdb.cites.illinois.edu. In order to be able to log in, you must have a NetID Contact entry in Contacts Database and at least one permission granted.
To have a NetID Contact entry created for a new user, please email email@example.com with your request. Make sure the new user has an active AD account (in order to authenticate through Shibboleth) and either add them to an AD group with the permissions you wish them to have (assuming you have the rights to do so) or add them to the Permissions directly in Contacts Database. You can do this before they have a NetID Contact entry created.
If you do not currently have permission to add a user to an item, please check the permissions on the item you wish to add the user to and contact the person who has add permissions. If there are not permissions currently set on an item, contact the CDB Administrator.
What are the new features of CDB?
Unlike Contact Manager, CDB includes Active Directory (AD) integration and will allow permissions to be assigned to models via AD groups. Other improvements include a cleaner, faster GUI interface and an API.
How do I use CDB to access IRIS?If you already have access to CDB, you can look up the network you wish to access through IRIS and contact the person listed under permissions on that network with the ‘change contacts’ permission. They can add you directly.
To get access to IRIS without access to CDB, you will need to open a ticket with the Technology Services Help Desk. Please provide your NetID, department, the name of the network(s) you wish to access, and the access level (read, read/write). You do NOT have to have CDB access to be able to read/write in IRIS.
