Email, Exchange, Forwarding Email Messages as an Attachment

How do I forward email messages as an attachment?

A common reason to forward messages as an attachment is to report suspected phishing email.  Forwarding as an attachment preserves helpful diagnostic information, which is lost when simply forwarding the email.

Outlook Web App (OWA)

After logging into https://webmail.illinois.edu:
  1. In the "Message List," select the message you wish to forward.
  2. Click "Forward" (located above the body of the message on the right side of the OWA webpage). A new message will open with editable headers and body and the message will be automatically inserted into the body of the new message.
  3. Drag the message from the message list into the body of the new message. This will attach the message to the email you're about to send.
  4. Enter relevant information in the "To," "Subject," and "Body" of the message and, optionally, delete the message body.
  5. Click "Send."

Outlook (Windows)

  1. In the "Message List," select the message you wish to forward.
  2. Press the Ctrl, Alt, and F keys, simultaneously.  A new message will open with an attached message.
  3. Enter relevant information in the "To," "Subject," and "Body" of the message.
  4. Click "Send."

Outlook (Mac)

  1. In the "Message List," select the message you wish to forward.
  2. Right click on the message (Press and hold the "Control" button while clicking).  A menu will open.
  3. Click on "Forward Special."
  4. Select, "As Attachment."  A new message will open with an attached message.
  5. Enter relevant information in the "To," "Subject," and "Body" of the message.
  6. Click "Send."
