Networking, Windows, Locating the Active Directory Computer Name

How to find the full Active Directory (AD) computer name on Windows 7, 8.1, and 10.

The full computer name is available on the system properties window.  On computer keyboards that have a "Break" key (usually located near the number pad), you may use a shortcut to open the window: Windows key + Break.
  1. Press and hold down the Windows key.
  2. While holding down the Windows Key, press the Break key.
  3. Once the System window opens, release both the Windows and Break keys.
The full computer name is located in the "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" section.

If the keyboard does not have a Break key, follow these instructions:

Windows 7
  1. Click on "Start."
  2. Right click on "Computer."  A menu will open.
  3. Click on "Properties."
  4. The "Full computer name" is located in the "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" section.
    • The full computer name is formatted as ComputerName.ad.uillinois.edu.

Windows 8

  1. Open Search.
    • If using a touch screen: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and select "Search".
    • If using a mouse, navigate to the lower right corner, move the mouse pointer up, and click "Search."
  2. Type "System" in the search box. 
  3. Tap or click on "System."
  4. The "Full computer name" is located in the "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" section.
    • The full computer name is formatted as ComputerName.ad.uillinois.edu.

Windows 10

  1. In the "Search the web and Windows" box, type "system."
  2. In the search results, select "System Control Panel."
  3. The "Full computer name" is located in the "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" section.
    • The full computer name is formatted as ComputerName.ad.uillinois.edu.
