How to Publish to Tableau Server

  1. In Tableau Desktop, open the workbook.
  2. Verify the Sheet Names have been given meaningful names (these names appear in Tableau Server).
  3. Determine which sheets will be viewable in Tableau Server.
  4. From the Server menu, select Publish Workbook
  5. Enter the server name
    1. Test = tableau-test.admin.uillinois.edu
    2. Production = tableau.admin.uillinois.edu
  6. Enter your login credentials for the server.
  7. From the “Publish Workbook to Tableau Server” box
    1. Select the project to publish to
    2. Do not make any modifications to Permissions
      1. Workbook permissions will be reset to project permissions every day.
    3. Under Views to Share, select the sheets to be visible (results of step 3)
    4. Under Options, if publishing multiple sheets and wish for them to be displayed as tabs from the same dashboard then check the box for “Show Sheets as Tabs”
    5. Select the “Authentication” button
      1. Select the desired authentication method for the database connections
        1. Prompt User
        2. Embedded password
        3. Impersonate (only when connecting to SQL Server)
    6. Select the “Publish” button
      1. You may be prompted that it already exists, do you wish to overwrite.
  8. After successfully publishing a preview is displayed.
  9. Close the “Publish Workbook Results” window.
  10. Log onto the Tableau Server and verify everything is working.
