The Technology Services at FAA Services Hardware Loaner program has been developed to allow FAA Faculty and Staff to directly test and interact with cutting edge technology in their own work and learning environment.

Our goal is to:

  1. Develop a broad inventory of computer hardware and smart devices
  2. Provide an at-your-office hardware dropoff / pickup service to better work with the busy schedules of our clients

With over 300 million units sold since it's introduction in 2010, the Apple iPad popularized the modern tablet computer.
  • Operating System: The iPad features iOS, the same operating system used by the Apple iPhone.
  • Display: The iPad features an ever-evolving a multi-touch display, including a virtual keyboard.
  • Networking: the iPad can perform Internet functions such as web-browsing and emailing via Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing internet access both on and off campus.
  • Media: iPads can shoot video, take photos, and play music.
  • Additional Functionality: Games, reference, GPS navigation, social networking, etc. can be enabled by downloading and installing apps via Apple's AppStore.

Microsoft Surface
-

Late to the tablet market by 2012, Microsoft chose to forego it's manufacturering partners (HP, Dell, Lenovo) and develop it's own computer hardware for the first time in the company's 37-year history. The Microsoft Surface was introduced to provide the "Windows Alternative" to Apple's wildly popular iPad.
  • Operating System: While early models featured Windows RT (a version of Windows 8 built for mobile devices), current generations of the Surface are known for featuring a 'full' (non-mobile) version of the Windows operating system (in this case Windows 10, the same operating system used on desktop PCs).
  • Display: The Surface features an ever-evolving a multi-touch display, including a virtual keyboard.
  • Networking: the Surface can perform Internet functions such as web-browsing and emailing via Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing internet access both on and off campus. Wired connectivity (Ethernet) is availalbe via an dock peripheral.
  • Media: The MS Surface can shoot video, take photos, and play music.
  • Additional Functionality: Games, reference, GPS navigation, social networking, etc. can be enabled by downloading and installing applications via the internet, or via Microsoft's digital distribution platform: Windows Store. Details on pre-installed apps can be found here.

Samsung Galaxy Tab

Samsung introduced the Galaxy Tab series of tablet computers in September of 2010, 5 months after Apple's first-generation iPad was released. Throughout it's run it has featured Google's Andoid mobile OS.

Asus Transformer Prime

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime (TF201) was released in December of 2011. Heralded for being the first Android tablet computer with a quad-core processor, the Prime was renowned for it's graphical capabilities and unique design. Shortly before it's release, Asus beat a trademark violation lawsuit from Hasbro, the toy company which ownes the rights to the popular Transformers franchise.
  • Operating System: Android OS
  • Display: The Transformer Prime features an ever-evolving a multi-touch display, including a virtual keyboard.

Apple MacBook Pro

The MacBook Pro line of portable computers was first introduced in 2006. While retaining many of it's physical featues over the lifetime of the product run (silver body, black keys), Apple's midweight, high-end laptop has moved increasingly towards slimmer and lighter proportions.

  • Display: Originally featureing an LED-backlit "glossy" display, newer "Retina" models are defined by their signifigantly higher pixel density.

Lenovo Thinkpad

Lenovo purchased the division and brand in 2005, though the visual characteristics (minimalist, "boxy" black and red features) have remained. Renowned for their durability and ease of maintnance, Thinkpads are notably the only portable computers cleared for service on the International Space Spation.

Apple Mac Mini

Apple's Mac Mini was first introducted in 2005, and was heralded for it's lower price point (made possible by removing the monitor, keyboard and mouse from the equation).
  • Operating System: Mac OS X
  • Display: None included - the Mac Mini is a standalone computer. Monitor, keyboard and mouse must either be provided by the customer, or specifically requested from Technology Services at FAA.

Apple TV
-

The Apple TV is a small network appliance and entertainment device that can receive digital data from a number of sources and stream it to a television or projector. In an Airplay-capable classroom, it allows students and instructors to present media wirelessly.
  • Operating System: While the 3rd Generation Apple TV utilizes a modified version of iOS 8, newer models utilize tvOS.
  • Functionality: Connect to the iTunes Store to rent movies and TV shows, and stream audio and video podcasts. Apple TV can also display photos from Flickr and iCloud in a slideshow, with automatic cross-dissolve transitions, and optionally with the Ken Burns effect.
