College of FAA: Operating System Updates, Self-Service (Mac OS)
Technology Services at FAA now offers self-service operating system upgrades for our managed Macs via Managed Software Center (aka Munki). This article explains how to request and install one.

- Users of Managed Macs throughout FAA that are not currently running the latest operating system.
Technology Services at FAA may have already reached out to you to offer an upgrade for your computer. If not, please contact us to request an evaluation to see if an upgrade is right for your computer. Make sure to include your computer name (e.g., FAA-XXXXXX) in the request. We’ll determine whether or not your computer would be compatible with a newer operating system. We can also help ensure that apps will be compatible with the new operating system or else ensure that they can be upgraded before or during the process. If Technology Services at FAA makes an operating system upgrade available for your computer, you can install it at your convenience, via the following instructions that follow.
- It often works best to initiate the upgrade at the end of your workday or if there is a period during the day when you do not need your computer for 2.5 hours or so. Simply download the upgrade, save your work, start the installation accepting the prompt to log out, and walk away.
- We strongly advise you to be on-campus and connected to ethernet when you take this upgrade.
- If you are using a laptop, please make sure it is connected to AC power during the upgrade and not running solely on battery.
- Your computer will not be usable for most of the upgrade. Please allow at least 2 to 2.5 hours for the entire process. Your interaction will be required occasionally during the first 45 minutes.
- Open "Managed Software Center.app", which can be found in the /Applications folder.
- The app will likely check for updates at this time.
- "Apple OS X 10.10 Yosemite" will be shown under "Other available updates". Before installing this upgrade, please make sure that "No pending updates" is shown toward the top of the screen. If there are other pending updates, please install them prior to installing the Yosemite upgrade. Once you are ready to begin the Yosemite upgrade process, click the '+' button towards the right-hand side of the window.
- NOTE: Under certain circumstances, Managed Software Center.app may open in an alternate view (see the "Software" tab at the top of the window). "Apple OS X 10.10 Yo..." will be shown as an available update. In this case, you can also initiate the upgrade process by clicking "UPDATE" next to this item.
- Once you begin the upgrade process, the Yosemite upgrade software will begin to install. This may take 20-45 minutes depending on the speed of your ethernet connection. Progress can be monitored if you are viewing the "Updates" tab in the Managed Software Center.app window.
- Once the software is downloaded, it will be shown under the heading, "1 pending update". Please heed the warning that is shown repeatedly: "Restart Required". Make sure to save your work at this time and close all other applications.
- Once you are ready, click the "UPDATE" button in the upper-right-hand corner of the window. Before selecting UPDATE, please be aware the remainder of the process takes 1.5 to 2 hours
- You will be reminded that a restart is required. Click "Log out and update" to proceed.
- At this point, the upgrade no longer requires your attention. The rest of the process takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the overall speed of your computer. The remaining instructions help you understand what to expect and show you how to know when the upgrade is done.
- Managed Software Center will download and install the update materials at the Login Window.
- Next, the computer will reboot into an OS installer mode and install the upgrade.
- When the upgrade is done, the computer will return to the Login Window (with a new background picture). Managed Software Center will install other software updates that required 10.10 to be installed first (e.g., newer iLife apps, etc.).
- Once your computer returns to the Login Window for 10 seconds or so without Managed Software Center running, the upgrade process is done and you can use your computer.
