This article applies only to Faculty, Staff and Students of the College of Fine and Applied Arts (FAA).
Technology Services at FAA is here to provide information and automated tools to make everyone's job easier when it comes to using technology. One area we can help you is in understanding the University of Illinois standards and guidelines for securing University-owned desktop and laptop computers.
- Standards are requirements that must be met by anyone using a University-owned system.
- Guidelines are strongly recommended to ensure security of data.
Main Ideas from the Standards
- Computers need to have a screensaver lock after a period of inactivity of 20 minutes or less.
- All systems require strong passwords in accordance with the University Strong Password Policy.
- Please don't share usernames and passwords.
- Use your netid and password for your daily work. If you have administrative rights, please use that special account only when you need to make changes to the system.
- Personal or sensitive data needs to be protected. This can be done by physically securing any flash drives and removable media or by closing any documents or programs when not in use.
- To ensure your computer works and your data is safe please ensure your computer has a host-based software firewall, anti-malware software package, and an actively supported operating system, which is regularly patched. Technology Services at FAA provides these services as part of our managed computer service.
Campus and Technology Services at FAA realize that not everything can fit into the campus standards. They have created a process to approve any exceptions that may be needed.
- Please complete an exception request form including a business case.
- Technology Services at FAA, as the data owners, will review then forward the request to your Unit Executive Officer for approval.
- Your UEO will then forward it to the campus review board for final approval and documentation of the exception.
