Security, Prevention and Cleaning an Infected Machine

I believe my machine is infected with a virus or malware. What are my options? How do I protect my machine from viruses and malware?

How do I protect my machine?

Mac OS X

Windows

Note: Technology Services will only officially support McAfee, but any antivirus software is fine so long as it is updated.

I think I'm infected. How did this happen and what can I do?

Possible reasons:

  •     Not having operating systems and applications updated. This includes Windows, OS X version xyz, Java, Adobe flash, Antivirus, etc. Make sure all of these are current.
  •     Visiting questionable websites. This could be shareware sites, torrents, free streaming of premium channels, downloading .exe and zip files.
  •     Clicking on links in email that may be suspicious or ask for credentials. No respectful company asks for credentials via email.
  •     Bad luck. Sometimes it only takes an infected webpage or infected advertising banner to spread its grief to a machine.

Cleaning your machine (assuming you already have a current and functioning Antivirus program installed):

Mac - Download and run Malware Bytes for Mac. If you can't get to the internet, you can use a USB key to transfer the program from another computer.

PC -  Download and run Malware Bytes for Windows. It is recommended you run the scan in safe mode. If you can't get to the internet, you can use a USB key to transfer the program from another computer.

If you are having trouble installing, updating, and running Malware Bytes on your mobile device you can bring them into the Help Desk for assistance.

Other options for both Mac and Windows:

If Malware Bytes didn't help your situation, please contact the Help Desk via email or phone (217-244-7000) to arrange a referral to the OnSite Consulting team. This referral includes one hour of service at no charge to help clean your machine.
