ClassTech, Troubleshooting, Laptop Display (HDMI & VGA)

Troubleshooting steps for laptop connection issues in general assignment classrooms.

First, ensure that the system is on by pressing Display On on the control panel or Start with Audio and Video on a pullout touchscreen. Wait 30-90 seconds for the Display On button to stop blinking, or the touch panel to stop counting down. If you have not done so already, restart the system.

Once you have made sure the system is on, check the physical connections:

  • Make sure the cable is securely connected to both your laptop (or adapter) and the lectern (if visible).
  • Unplug the cable (or adapter) from your laptop and plug it back in to refresh the connection.
  • If using the VGA cable, ensure that the cable is plugged in to the Input port, not the Monitor one. Not all rooms have a monitor port and this does not apply to rooms where the cable runs in to the cabinet.

Next check that the system is set up correctly:

  • Ensure that the Picture Mute button on the touch panel or control panel is turned off
  • Ensure that you are on the correct source. These should be labelled on the control panel and may say "HDMI", "Laptop", or "VGA". Please note, "PC" refers to the PC in the room
  • Try selecting a different source (such as "DVD") and switching back to laptop/HDMI/VGA.

Finally, check your laptop's display settings:

Windows 7, 8, 10:
  • Press the Windows key and the P key together. Then select Duplicate.
Mac:
  • Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
  • Click System Prefernces > Displays > Arrangements
  • Make sure the Mirror Displays box is checked.
