Illinois Compass 2g, How instructors can share files that students can see but not download

Instructors using Illinois Compass 2g can use the U of I service to share documents with students but prevent the downloading of the documents being shared. Instructors must upload the file to the U of I service, configure the sharing options, then copy and paste a link to the document in a Compass 2g page.

Once the file is uploaded to U of I, click on the document to view it and then click the Share button in the upper right corner. On the popup window that appears click the link labeled "People in this folder" and select the option "People with the link," then click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the popup to toggle the Advanced Settings. On the Shared Settings page that appears there is a section labeled "Allow Download," remove the check from the checkbox next to "Allow users with the shared link to download this item," then click Save. In the popup window, copy the link that is highlighted under the heading "Shared Link," then click Close.

Navigate to your Compass course page and go to a Content Area. Select Build Content > Weblink. Give the Weblink a name and paste the link from UofI Box into the URL field, then click Submit.

Students that click on the Weblink will be brought to the page to view the document but will not be able to download it.
