Learn@Illinois Moodle - Curbing Cheating in Forums by Requiring Students to Post First

This article explains how to use a forum setting, available only in the Learn@Illinois Moodle Service, to limit cheating in forums.

The purpose of the "Require students to post before viewing others' posts" setting is to prevent cheating by requiring students to make a post before being allowed to see other students’ posts. In addition to reducing cheating, this also reduces the “echo chamber” effect in some courses. (If you have used the “Q&A Forum Type”, this is similar, but no longer requires a “seed” post from the instructor.)

Note: After turning on this setting, students will need to wait 30 minutes before being able to see other students’ posts.

To use this setting:

  1. Go to any forum and click on Edit Settings in the Administration block.
  2. Verify that the forum is set up as a "Standard forum for general use".
  3. Turn on the option: Require students to post before viewing others' posts.
  4. Save and display.
