Learn@Illinois Moodle - Curbing Cheating in Forums by Requiring Students to Post First

This article explains how to use a forum setting, available only in the Learn@Illinois Moodle Service, to limit cheating in forums.

The purpose of the "Require students to post before viewing others' posts" setting is to prevent cheating by requiring students to make a post before being allowed to see other students' posts. In addition to reducing cheating, this also reduces the "echo chamber" effect in some courses. (If you have used the "Q&A Forum Type", this is similar, but no longer requires a "seed" post from the instructor.)

Note: After turning on this setting, students will need to wait 15 minutes before being able to see other students' posts.

Using this setting

  1. Go to any forum and click on Edit Settings in the Administration block.
  2. Verify that the forum is set up as a "Standard forum for general use".
  3. Click the Require students to post before viewing others' posts checkbox.
Choose Standard forum for general use and click Require students to post before viewing others' posts checkbox screenshot
  4. Click the Save and return to course button.
