What group should I use for AnyConnect VPN?
Two group options exist when connecting to AnyConnect: General-Use and Library-Resources
There are two group options when connecting to AnyConnect, and which you use depends on what you are trying do access.
These two groups function quite differently, and it is important to know when to use each.
The General-Use group is what most faculty and staff should use for most needs. This group provides access to both university system resources (such as Banner, Travel & Expense Management (TEM), and others) and to department resources (such as allowing for you to Remote Desktop to your office computer, or access a departmental file share. While connected to this group, only network traffic destined for university/departmental resources travels through the VPN connection (meaning the TV show you are streaming on your computer at the same time does not go through the UIC network). However, this group does not provide access to Library electronic collections. For that, see the next group.
The Library-Resources group is what students are more likely to need to use routinely, while faculty and staff will need to use it sometimes, as this provides access to Library electronic collections from off-campus, along with access to university system resources (such as Banner, Travel & Expense Management (TEM), and others), but does not allow access to department resources. While connected to this group, essentially all network traffic travels through the VPN connection (meaning the TV show you are streaming and other websites you are browsing on your computer is coming through the UIC network). While this configuration is necessary to provide the access to Library electronic collections, it is not recommended to remain connected to this group longer than necessary, for your privacy and to avoid potential performance impacts on the UIC network.
