Siebel Center Printers, Copiers, Scanners, Plotters (Poster printer)
Instructions for printing, copying, and scanning in the Siebel Center.
Individual queue names for using options on the shared departmental printers (such as double-sided ) are no longer supported.

Networking and printing
In order to print, from a personal machine you must be able to make a connection to the print server.
- From off-campus you must connect via the Tech Services VPN before attempting to connect to the print server.
- From IllinoisNet_Guest wireless you must connect via the Tech Services VPN before attempting to connect to the print server.
- From IllinoisNet wireless or a wired connection on campus you can talk directly to the print server without needing the VPN client.
When prompted for a username and password, supply your username in the form uofi\NetID and use your Active Directory password.
Printing from Windows
- Go to the start menu and search for Control Panel.
- Go to Devices and Printers.
- Click on Add a printer.
- Select The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Select Find a printer by name or TCP/IP address and hit next.
- Enter \\engr-print-01.engr.illinois.edu\[Printer Name] where [Printer Name] is one of the Printer Queue names above.
- Click Next.
- If prompted for a user name and password, enter uofi\NetID and your password.
- Afterwards, you should get a You've successfully added [Printer Name] on engr-print-01.engr.illinois.edu.
- Click Next.
- If you want to set this printer as your default printer. click the Set as the default printer checkbox. If you want to print a test page, click on the Print a test page button.
- Click Finish and the printer should be ready to use.
Mac set-up for Xerox Phaser 5550 printers
- Here is the driver link for the Xerox-phaser-5550.dmg. The latest driver from Xerox for Macs is for OSX 10.10. This will still work on newer versions of OSX. Download the DMG file and install it on your system. During the install, you will reach a point where the install wants to search for printers. Tell it to continue without selecting a printer. This will install the software you need to select later when adding the printer.
- Open System Preferences.
- Click on Printers & Scanners.
- Click the + button to add a printer.
- Press the Control key while clicking the "Default" icon (or any other icon on the toolbar), then choose Customize Toolbar from the contextual menu that appears.
- Drag the Advanced (gear) icon to the toolbar.
- Click Done.
- Click the Advanced icon that was added to the toolbar.
- In the "Type" drop-down menu select "Windows printer via spoolss".
- In the URL field, type the printer's address: smb://engr-print-01.engr.illinois.edu/[print queue name] (e.g. smb://engr-print-01.engr.illinois.edu/siebl-2302-printer)
- In the Name field, type the name you would like to use for this printer in Mac OS X (suggestion: the queue name).
- In the "Use" drop-down menu choose "Select Printer Software", then on the pop window select the "Xerox Phaser 5550DT" driver and click OK.
- Click Add.
- The Setting up printer window will appear. Change the last two options. Under "Hole Punch Type" select "Non Metric Hole Punch". Check the box next to "Optional Finisher". All other settings will be left as default.
- Click OK
The printer should now appear under the list of available printers.
You may also set that printer to be your default printer by selecting it from the drop-down menu on the Print & Fax page in System Preferences.
NOTE: The first time you print to a specific printer, the print queue notification will pop up, informing you that the print job status is "On-hold (Authentication Required)". Click on the job, then the "Resume" button, and you will be prompted to enter your AD login and password. Enter that information this way:
And click on "Remember this password in my keychain" to store it for future printing.
If the netid and password are not being accepted, please follow these steps to ensure Kerberos authentication is enabled:
- Open a terminal window and type the following command: cupsctl WebInterface=Yes
- Open a web browser and navigate to localhost:631/admin
- Check the box next to "User Kerberos authentication"
- Click the "Change Settings" button and then enter you Mac admin credentials.
- Your netid and password should now be accepted the next time you try to print.
Printing from Unix/Linux
Manually adding the print queue for self managed machines
Almost every version of Linux has slightly different GUI capabilities but the following setup should work for most systems that use CUPS printing backend.
NOTE You will need to replace <queuename> with the print queue that you are using.

Please note: some of the terminology and labels in the print dialog boxes may change based on your distribution or application.
- You will need the CUPS administration interface running on your machine. It’s default location is: localhost:631
- If you're using Ubuntu you may need to visit: https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/cups.html.en to install and configure it.
- You will also need the unrar program installed
- On Ubuntu you can install it with apt-get install unrar
- On CentOS you can install it with yum install unrar
- Download the driver from Xerox:
- Install printer in the CUPS Administration interface:
- go to localhost:631 in your browser
- Add a new printer as a “LPD/LPR Host or Printer”
- Below we will add the 3203 printer, you can replace this with the queue name of whatever printer you wish to add. The queue names are listed at the top of this document.
- LPR URL: lpd://engr-print-01.engr.illinois.edu/siebl-3203-printer
- ppd file: xr5550dt.ppd # browse and select the PPD file you downloaded and extracted earlier.
- Hole Punch Type: Non-Metric Hole Punch
- Optional Finisher: Enabled or installed.
- When printing:
- In "advanced"/"finishing" options of your application print dialog
- On your computer
- Paper Destination "Stacker Lower Tray"
- Stapling "Front"
- Hole Punching "3 Holes"
- On printer (on the physical printer’s menus
- printer setup > paper handling setup > paper destination = "Stacker Lower Tray"

The Computer Science department owns and funds a large format printer for printing posters for research conferences and other CS department events. If you would like to have a poster printed, you need to submit a request and the Engineering IT Help Desk will print it for you. How to submit a poster printing request:
- Go to https://go.illinois.edu/posterprint/
- Fill in the form (Name, Net ID, Department, Poster Size)
- Attach a file of the poster
- Submit the form and wait for the Engineering IT Help Desk to notify you when the request is processed (Please allow at least 1 business day for the request to be processed)
- Pick up poster at the Siebel Center Help Desk at 2302
Some additional information:
- The posters have to be related to Computer Science
- We accept poster file in .jpeg, .png, or .pdf format
- Posters will be processed in chronological order. To avoid delays please submit form as early as possible.
- Pick up is offered during help desk hours, which are Monday–Fri 9 AM – 5 PM
There are copiers in 3203 and 3323 Siebel Center. A PIN number is needed to use the copiers. If you have a staff, faculty, or graduate student appointment with the CS department, you will be assigned a PIN number to use with the copiers located in Siebel Center 3203 and 3323. This PIN number can be retrieved by contacting the EngrIT helpdesk located in Siebel 2302.
There is a scanner in 2302 Siebel Center available to CS faculty, staff and students. The copiers in 3203 and 3323 also have scan to email capability and are available to CS faculty, staff, and students.
