In September 2018, Microsoft released Office 2019, an on-premises version of Office 365. The base installer may be used unlicensed for Office 365 click-to-run (C2R) use. Or it may be combined with the Office 2019 campus license on eligible computers.
The Endpoint Services (EPS) team has packaged the Office 365/2019 software suite and volume license for use with the Multi-Tenant Munki service, and has released it to production catalogs for general MTM stakeholder use.
Office 365/2019 will install cleanly over Office 2016; for this reason, side-by-side installations of Office 2016 and Office 365/2019 are not possible. Also for this reason, attempting to use Munki to uninstall Office 2016 from a Mac that has already been upgraded to Office 365/2019 will fail. Finally, adding this version to your manifests as an optional install may have unintended consequences, as it will be offered as an update to all of your customers on Office 2016.
Known issues that the EPS team is aware of when upgrading clients from Office 2016 to 365/2019, include rare reports of issues with the Outlook database. Microsoft has provided a KB article on rebuilding the Office database in such cases.
Microsoft Office 365 and 2019 share a common base installer. Office 365 uses Microsoft's click-to-run (C2R) technology, which relies on customer logins for licensing; whereas Office 2019 uses the campus volume license.
To install Office 365 for click-to-run use, add microsoft_office_365 to the Managed Installs (or Optional Installs) section of your unit's manifest(s).
To install Office 2019 and the campus volume license, add microsoft_office_2019 to the Managed Installs (or Optional Installs) section of your unit's manifest(s).
The EPS team recommends removing Office 2016 from your manifests at the same time you add 365/2019; please see below for instructions.
When you add 365/2019 to your manifest structure, please remove microsoft_office_2016_vl_serializer. While not strictly necessary, this is a matter of good housekeeping and will enable the EPS team to more easily retire Office 2016 from our service down the road. Note that attempting to use Munki to uninstall Office 2016 from a Mac that has already been upgraded to Office 2019/365 will fail.
To reflect the switch from Office 2016 to Office 365/2019, modify your unit's manifest template(s) to remove microsoft_office_2016_vl_serializer and add microsoft_office_365 or microsoft_office_2019 (depending on your needs) in its place. See more information about manifest templates.
