Rationale

The University supports the Tableau server only. Clients can use our enterprise server infrastructure to publish and share content. Clients who are developing Dashboards, reports, and visualizations use the Tableau Desktop tool. Tableau Desktop is the only gateway for the Tableau server to publish content. The University does not support Tableau Desktop nor provide licenses. Customers must purchase their own license from Tableau, though we do suggest consult Illinois Webstore.

Tableau Desktop is an independent tool that interfaces with different supported databases, files, servers (Oracle, SQL, MSSQL, Cloudsdb, Google analytics, Amazon server, Excel, Txt file, etc.) which requires knowledge and training for development. Clients around the campuses connect to their own datasets to create Dashboards/reports and publish on our server, who may have questions about “how do I”. This is something we do not provide support for and Tableau Desktop clients can find additional help. This document is to provide awareness to contact Tableau or Tableau community instead of AITS, for development-related questions.
