Ransomware is a type of malware that captures, encrypts, or exfiltrates data from a computer or network, usually displaying a screen demanding payment before the data is released.

If your computer displays a ransomware screen:

  1. Keep the computer powered on; do NOT restart it or shut it down.
  2. Disconnect from all networks; unplug from dock or ethernet, and disable wi-fi.
  3. Call the IT Service Desk at 217-244-7000, and mention this article (115078).
  4. Be prepared to provide:
    • Whether it's an Illinois-managed or personal device.
    • What you were doing before the ransomware appeared.
    • When the incident occurred.
    • Any other affected devices.
