cPanel, Force HTTPS Redirect

The cPanel server provides a feature to force your website to use https. Using this feature is preferred over manually adding redirects using the "Redirects" feature or manually adding rules to the .htaccess file.

Force HTTPS Redirect for your site

In most cases it is preferred to send website visitors to the HTTPS version of your website. CPanel provides a feature to manage this for you.

Why would I choose to use this feature?

All websites on cPanel have an SSL certificate, in most cases managed by AutoSSL. The presence of the certificate makes your websites available over HTTPS. HTTPS signifies that the website is secure and traffic between the browser and the server is encrypted. It is a best practice to go one step further to ensure that your website is only available over HTTPS. This prevents browsers from displaying an "Unsafe Site" warning, improves search index ranking, keeps data secure, and prevents some kinds of malicious website tampering. Having

Forcing HTTPS Redirection is also necessary for Illinois Shibboleth authentication (single sign-on) to work smoothly.

To enable HTTPS redirection

  1. Visit your cPanel dashboard and find the item labeled Domains. (The search box at the top of the screen can help.)
  2. Each of your domains will be listed on the resulting page.
  3. In the column labeled Force HTTPS Redirect, toggle the control to On for the domain you wish to restrict.
