Outlook: Where to Send Spam & Phishing Emails
A guide on where to send spam and phishing attempt emails.
If you have already interacted with a suspicious email, please take these steps immediately to help secure your account:
- If you have typed in your username and password to a phishing site, reset your password using the NetID manager (go.uillinois.edu/password).
- If you have opened a suspicious attachment, report the action to your campus' security team (go.uillinois.edu/contactsecurity) and follow their instructions.
- If you did nothing other than open the email or reply to it, then there is no direct threat, and you should simply ignore future messages from the attackers after reporting it.
Forwarding Spam & Phishing Attempts
If you suspect that you have received a spam or phishing email to your University account, please forward it to the University’s Cybersecurity team for further analysis using the Report Spam button in Outlook. The steps for doing so are provided by Technology Services in the KB article titled Using the Report Spam Outlook Add-in.
For questions about this add-on, please reach out to Security (go.uillinois.edu/contactsecurity).
Alternate Method
If you are unable to forward your message using the Report Spam button, you may do the following:
- Select the email in your Inbox.
- Click the three dots to the right of the Forward button.
- Select Forward as Attachment, and send the email to report-spam@illinois.edu.
For information on recent campus phishing attempts, please see the University's Phishing Alerts page.
