Creating and Uploading Temporal Videos
What are temporal videos?
Faculty members are welcome to create additional video content for their specific course section hosted in Canvas. These videos are typically timely, short-term resources designed to support students throughout the course, such as weekly updates, assignment explanations, or brief case studies related to current events and emerging topics. These videos will not be part of the master course shell for Canvas that each facultly member will use as a starting point for their course.
Teaching & Learning Support
Because these videos are intended to be timely resources with a limited shelf-life, and to allow faculty to create and publish content quickly without needing support from Teaching & Learning, they will be fully self-produced and will not require a T&L review process or resources.
While these videos are not eligible for checkout of T&L recording equipment, faculty are welcome to use the Wohlers Media Commons Studio for recording. For those who prefer to record independently from a home or office setting, we recommend the following basic equipment setup described below—many of these items you may already own.
Video Recording
Record on your phone
Recording with your phone is a simple and effective option that can create a more casual, conversational feel and help build authenticity with your learners.
Record using your computer’s webcam
Your computer’s built-in webcam works well for informal recordings, especially when you want to incorporate slides, demonstrations, or screen sharing. For additional tips and guidance, please refer to this article on self-recording in Zoom.
Use an external webcam
An external webcam can provide higher image quality than most built-in webcams while still being relatively affordable. We recommend this model specifically.
Audio Recording
If you are recording in a quiet environment, the built-in microphone on your phone or computer is typically sufficient. For best results, position yourself close to the microphone and speak clearly and confidently.
If you would like greater flexibility while recording or are looking for more professional audio quality, we recommend this model specifically.
Post-production Editing
Post-production editing is not required for these videos and they do not need to include standard Gies branding such as animated introductions, opening title cards, or the Block “I” icon in the corner. If you plan to do any post-production editing, please refer to this article for our recommended workflow. While you are not required to use Adobe Premiere for editing these videos, it is the platform T&L is best equipped to support should you have any questions. User-friendly tools such as Canva also offer many of the features needed for basic video editing and may be a great fit for simpler projects.
Uploading your content to your Canvas site
Once your video is ready, follow these instructions for uploading it to your Canvas site.
