generative AI, ChatGPT EDU, Licensing

ChatGPT EDU licensing has two components: The base user license and optional credit packages for extra functionality. The base license is required, and allows use of some GPT models, and image generations. Further functionality will require purchasing an optional credit subscription.

ChatGPT EDU licensing has two components:

  1. The base user license.
  2. An optional credit packages for extra functionality.

The base user license includes:

  • Unlimited access to the GPT 5.5 instant model (note: GPT versions may change rapidly based on ChatGPT's new policies and GPT role outs).
  • 3 image generations per rolling 24-hour period.
  • 5 Deep Research queries per rolling 24-hour period.

"The 24-hour period begins at the time of first use. For example, if a user generates an image at 10:00 AM, they can generate 2 additional images until 10:00 AM the following day. Usage beyond these limits will consume credits according to the rates listed." (help.openai.com, 8-June-2026)

For additional functionality like thinking models, or use of Codex, a credit subscription must be purchased. For ChatGPT Codex or "Codex" ChatGPT has a rate table located at: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001106-codex-rate-card If you would like help in determining how many credits per week you should purchase please contact the generative AI support team at email address: genai-support@illinois.edu
