University Bursar - What is the Student Money Management Center (SMMC)?

The Student Money Management Center (SMMC) provides financial education that helps students employees, and alumni for all universities in the University of Illinois System - Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield.

SMMC works to empower students by supporting student retention through education and advocacy, conducting research on the financial needs of special student populations, develop new & manage existing financial education curricula, distribute communications on financial wellness, and we’re active in the national financial wellness discussion.

SMMC offers the following services: 

  • University of Illinois Financial Literacy Badges Program
  • Campaigns (e.g., Understand Your Refund, Know What You Owe) 
  • Webinars and podcasts 
  • Referral program to Money Mentors for financial coaching 
  • Bi-weekly e-newsletters, website, and social media outreach
