New Student Technology Information

A guide for new students at the iSchool.

The iSchool Help Desk strives to make the technology you use as simple and stable as possible for students. We are also here to provide support whenever needed, so please feel free to come to us with any questions. 

Before you come to campus:

  1. Make sure you can meet the:

    1. Graduate Student Laptop Requirement, or

    2. Undergraduate Student Laptop Requirement.

  2. Claim your Net ID.

  3. Set your recovery options in case you forget your UIUC password.

  4. The university uses Two Factor Authentication (2FA). Set it up in the NetID Center.

  5. Log in to your University of Illinois email account and either check it regularly or set up forwarding.

  6. Log in to Canvas, the University of Illinois Learning Management System (Note: Classes will be made available to students one week prior to instruction or earlier by instructor request)

  7. Activate your Google Apps account and Box account by clicking the "on" button for each. 

  8. Check with the iSchool Help Desk if you need assistance.

When you arrive on campus:

  1. Become familiar with our building facilities and hours.

  2. Get your mobile device on the wireless network.

  3. Learn how to print in the building.

  2. Learn how to check out laptops and audio/visual equipment.

  3. Set up your Illinois Box.com file storage.

  4. Look into LinkedIn Learning through the University of Illinois.

  5. Download free and discounted software through the University of Illinois Webstore.
