General Information

Jamf Migrate is part of a workflow that streamlines and simplifies the migration of a Mac's management from the Workspace ONE service to the Jamf Pro service in just minutes. During the migration process, a Jamf Migrate package is deployed to Macs via Munki, Workspace ONE management is removed from the device (including profiles and configurations), and finally the Jamf Pro management profile is installed. Jamf Migrate displays a wizard on the device, informing users at every stage of the process.

Getting Started

To get started with Jamf Migrate:

  1. Ensure your college/department is provisioned in the Jamf Pro service
  2. Build out your Mac configurations in Jamf Pro, including any desired profiles, applications, Apple App Store apps, and ADE/DEP workflows
  3. Submit a support request to the Endpoint Services team to transition your Mac MDM assignments in Apple School Manager from Workspace ONE to Jamf Pro and build a Jamf Migrate configuration profile for your college/department.
  4. Add the Jamf Migrate package (Munki name key: jamf_migrate) to your Munki manifests
  5. Instruct users to install the Jamf Migrate package in Munki's Managed Software Center and proceed through the Jamf Migrate wizard

  6. Offboard your migrated Macs from the Munki and Workspace ONE services

Jamf Migrate Considerations

  • Supported OS - Jamf Migrate supports macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer. Macs should be upgraded to a supported OS prior to attempting to migrate them via Jamf Migrate.
  • Wireless Network - If a computer's only network connection is configured via a Workspace ONE configuration profile, it may lose internet connectivity. If this occurs, Jamf Migrate prompts users to select an available Wi-Fi network in order to continue. Whenever possible, a wired network connection is recommended when using Jamf Migrate.
  • System extensions, Privacy Preferences Policy Control, and content filter - End users may see macOS permission prompts and other notifications display when the Workspace ONE MDM profiles are removed.
  • Active Directory Binding - If a computer's Active Directory binding is configured via a Workspace ONE configuration profile, this binding will break during the migration process and the AD object may be deleted as part of the process.

Troubleshooting

Below are some common errors and troubleshooting steps:

  • "Your computer is assigned to the wrong MDM server"
    • Ensure that your Mac's MDM assignments in Apple School Manager have been transitioned from Workspace ONE to Jamf Pro by the Endpoint Services team and that the Mac has been assigned the appropriate Jamf Migrate configuration profile in Workspace ONE.

  • Managed Software Center is stuck in a loop after manually removing the Jamf Migrate app
    • Remove the /Library/JamfMigrate folder and try reinstalling the Jamf Migrate app via Managed Software Center
