Cisco Secure Client VPN: No connection to VPN service. Reattach failed.

This article explains how Mac users can fix the Cisco Secure Client (AnyConnect) error:“No connection to VPN service. Reattach failed.”

Screenshot of the Cisco Secure Client window showing an AnyConnect VPN error. A message reads ‘No connection to VPN service. Reattach failed.’ Below the message is a dropdown labeled ‘2 Tunnel All’ and a Connect button. A padlock icon appears on the left side of the window

1. What this error means

When you see “No connection to VPN service. Reattach failed”, it means the Cisco VPN app on your Mac cannot talk to its own background helper service.

The background helper is what actually does the work of connecting you to campus; the main app is just the “face” you click on. If the helper is not running, missing, or blocked, you get this error before you can connect.

For the Urbana campus VPN, you do not need the extra “Socket Filter” component that sometimes causes confusion or extra pop‑ups.

2. Quick check: simple restart and reopen

Sometimes the error appears after a macOS update or a one‑time glitch.

  1. Quit Cisco Secure Client completely.
    • Click the Cisco Secure Client icon if it is in your Dock and choose Quit
    • If you see it in the top menu bar (near the clock), click it and choose Quit
  2. Restart your Mac.
    • Click the Apple menu → Restart… and let the Mac restart fully
  3. Reopen Cisco Secure Client and try again
    • Open FinderApplicationsCiscoCisco Secure Client
    • Pick the appropriate profile and click Connect

If the error goes away, you are done. If you still see “No connection to VPN service. Reattach failed”, continue with the steps below.

3. Make sure the VPN service is allowed in the background

Cisco needs one background item turned on, but Urbana does not use the Socket Filter extension.

  1. Open System Settings (Apple menu → System Settings…).
  2. In the left column, click General.
  3. Click Login Items.
  4. Under Allow in the Background, look for something like:
    • Cisco Secure Client – AnyConnect VPN Services
  5. If you see it and the switch is off, turn it on This simply allows the VPN helper service to run; it is required for the VPN to work

Close System Settings, then try the VPN again from the Cisco Secure Client app.

If you can now connect, you are done. If you still get the same error, go to the next section.

4. Do NOT enable the Socket Filter (for Urbana)

On Urbana’s VPN, the Socket Filter is an extra feature for advanced security functions that the campus does not use.

During or after installation, you may see one or more pop‑ups:

  • A popup asking you if you want to allow “Cisco Secure Client Socket Filter” to filter network content.
  • A message that a system extension was blocked.

For Urbana:

  • When asked about the Socket Filter, click Don’t Allow
  • If you already allowed it, that’s OK, but it is not required for the basic campus VPN and can be removed later

5. Clean reinstall (recommended if the error persists)

If restarting and checking background items did not fix the problem, the easiest solution is to reinstall Cisco Secure Client.

Step 1 – Remove the existing Cisco Secure Client

  1. Open FinderApplicationsCisco.
  2. If you see a Cisco Secure Client Uninstaller or similar tool, double‑click it and follow the prompts to remove Cisco.
  3. If there is no uninstaller, it is fine to skip this and just install the newest version over the top, but using the uninstaller is preferred when available.

Step 2 – Download the official installer

  1. Open a web browser and go to the University of Illinois Webstore
    • “VPN, CISCO Secure Client, Installing Instructions for macOS” answers.uillinois
  2. Add the "CISCO Secure Connect Virtual Private Network (VPN) Urbana Only" to your cart
  3. Click Checkout
  4. On your order receipt, download the MacOS installer file. It will be named something like: "cisco-secure-client-macos-###-personal-installer.dmg"
  5. Open your Downloads folder and double‑click the .dmg file
  6. In the window that opens, double‑click the Cisco Secure Client installer package to start the installation

Step 3 – Install and allow only the needed parts

  1. Walk through the installer screens and click Continue, then Agree, then Install when prompted
  2. If your Mac asks for an administrator name and password, enter the login you normally use to install software on your Mac
  3. When the installer finishes, click Close
  4. A window may say “AnyConnect VPN Service Not Enabled” and offer to open System Settings. Click Open System Settings
  5. In System Settings → GeneralLogin Items, turn on the switch for Cisco Secure Client – AnyConnect VPN Services (allow in the background)

Step 4 – Ignore and remove the Socket Filter

During or after installation:

  1. If you see a pop‑up that a system extension was blocked, click OK (this is just an informational message)
  2. If you see a purple icon asking whether to allow the Cisco Secure Client Socket Filter to filter network content, click Don’t Allow. If you see this twice, click Don’t Allow both times
  3. Open FinderApplicationsCisco
  4. Find the app named “Cisco Secure Client – Socket Filter” (or “Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter”)
  5. Drag that Socket Filter app to the Trash
  6. Empty the Trash
  7. Restart your Mac once more

6. Connect to the Urbana VPN again

After the reinstall and restart:

  1. Open FinderApplicationsCiscoCisco Secure Client
  2. In the Cisco Secure Client window:
    • If a vpn.illinois.edu or similar Urbana profile is already there, select it
    • If not, enter the VPN server address given by the campus instructions
  3. Click Connect.
  4. When prompted, sign in using your full campus email address (your NetID@illinois.edu) and your campus credentials

If everything is set up correctly, you should now connect without seeing “No connection to VPN service. Reattach failed”

When to contact support

If you still see the same error after:

  • Restarting your Mac,
  • Allowing Cisco Secure Client – AnyConnect VPN Services in background,
  • Reinstalling Cisco Secure Client using the campus instructions, and
  • Deleting the Socket Filter app (per Urbana recommendations),

then there might be a deeper issue with your Mac, your account, or your specific Cisco version.
