Docked Laptop, Fixing Blank External Display Problem
When one uses external monitors along with a laptop, this is called extending the desktop (Windows key + P, see below).
While using a Lenovo laptop connected to a docking station, if the external monitors are not showing the extended desktop display, this is often fixed by power cycling the dock in a specific way. Though this issue can occur at seemingly random times, it does happen more often after a laptop returns from being connected to unfamiliar display equipment.
If monitor(s) are powered on, cables are connected properly, and the Windows Display settings have not been manually altered, power cycling the docking station using these steps is often the fastest, simplest fix.
With the computer on and signed in to Windows:
- Disconnect the USB-C cable form the laptop's charging port at the top/left edge.
- At the top of the docking station, press the power button; its indicator light should turn off.
- While the USB-C cable is still disconnected, press that same button on the dock. This should again turn its indicator light on with an amber color.
- Re-connect the USB-C cable to the laptop. The dock the indicator light should turn white (assuming the laptop is on).
- At this point, the external monitor(s) should again show the extended desktop.
If the external displays do not show the extended desktop, use the keyboard combo of Windows+P and
the Project menu options will appear the right of the desktop.
Select "Extend."
If the screens are still blank after selecting Extend, performing Windows+P again will confirm that settings have reverted back to "PC screen only."
At that point, the dock and/or displays will likely need firmware and/or driver updates.
