Displaying Your Device in a Gies Classroom

This guide will provide detailed instructions on how to manage the display settings of your device while connected in a Gies supported classroom.

For more information on using the technology provided in Gies supported classrooms and which rooms are supported, please refer to the Gies Classroom Technology Quick Start Guide.

"Expand All" will open all dropdown menus in this guide. "Collapse All" will reset the page to its original state. You can press "Return to Top," at the bottom of the page, to quickly come back to the very beginning of this guide. Open the panel below that corresponds to your device's operating system to get started.

Mac

Mac devices specify a main display, while allowing you to choose between two options for additional displays.

  • Extended display - See your desktop across multiple screens, with the ability to drag windows between screens.
  • Mirror for Built-in Display - See the same content that is being shown on the main display.

In most cases, your main display will be the screen of your device. In Gies classrooms, your secondary displays will be the screens chosen on the room's touch panel with "Wired/HDMI" or "Wireless" selected.

For more information on using the touch panel, please refer to the Gies Classroom Technology Quick Start Guide.

To access display options, open the "Apple Menu", "System Settings", then select "Displays" in the sidebar.

From the "Displays" menu, you can select your secondary monitor.

From the "Use as" row, you can select "Main Display," "Extended display," or "Mirror for Built-in Display."

When switching from "Mirror for Built-in Display" to "Extended display," you will need to select "Stop Mirroring" from the drop down menu before swapping to "Extended display."

Windows

Windows devices provide four ways to show content while using multiple displays.

  • PC screen only - See content only on your main display.
  • Duplicate - See the same content on each display you are connected to.
  • Extend - See your desktop across all screens, with the ability to drag windows between screens.
  • Second screen only - See content only on your second display.

To quickly access display options, press "Win+P." The Win, or Windows, key is located on the bottom-left corner of your keyboard, between "Ctrl" and "Alt."

From this menu, you can select from any of the four display options: "PC screen only," "Duplicate," "Extend," and "Second screen only."
