Enrollment and Roles

For all Moodle LTI activities or courses:

  • To manually enroll students, TAs, or other instructors in your course, do so in Canvas under People. They will sync to the Moodle site every 2 hours, or as soon as the user launches the LTI.
  • Rostered enrollments are automatically enrolled in your Moodle course site every 2 hours, or as soon as the user launches the LTI.

For Individual Activity LTIs:

  • Students will only be enrolled with a student role in the activities you have published in Canvas. Thus, they will show up as having "no role" in Moodle Participants, and will not show up in the Moodle gradebook.
  • Instructors are assigned the teacher role on the course level, so they have access to edit all activities in the Moodle course rather than just the ones published as LTIs.

For the Entire Course LTI:

  • Students will be enrolled as students in Participants in Moodle and will show up in the Moodle gradebook.
  • Instructors are assigned the teacher role on the course level.

Groups and Sections

  • CRN-based groups or sections should always be added via Canvas. If you did not set them up when you requested the course, please go here for instructions. Any CRN sections on Moodle that do not match Canvas will be automatically removed. This allows for automatic section changes if a student switches sections.
  • Non-CRN groups can be created in Moodle or Canvas.
    • If creating groups in Moodle, create them in Participants. These will NOT sync to Canvas.
    • If creating in Canvas, create them as Sections in Settings > Sections. These WILL sync to Moodle.
  • Groups will sync from Canvas to Moodle every 2 hours, at the same time that enrollments sync.
