Zoom, Resource (Service) Accounts

This article details how to setup a non-person resource account to be used for Zoom.

Please choose one of the following options to configure a non-person account access to Zoom.

Option A: Using an existing resource account

This option is to use an existing resource account and request a Zoom license be applied.

The resource account must already be mail enabled, and you must sign into it on Zoom on the web using it's UPN to get a confirmation email. After the account has been confirmed, send an email to consult@illinois.edu requesting the Zoom account be upgraded to a Pro license.

Option B: Default netid@mx.uillinois.edu Zoom account

Result:

  • The steps below will result in the email address for your Zoom account being set to: netid@mx.uillinois.edu

Limitations:

  • This account will only be (externally) reachable by sending email to account-name@mx.uillinois.edu. If you would like a Zoom account to be reachable with an illinois.edu email address by all email, please see Option C below.

For details on how to create a mail enabled account with mx.uillinois.edu domain follow the steps below:

  1. Create the Account in AD

The first step is to create an Active Directory (AD) user in the department's Organizational Unit (OU). This will have to be done by someone who has been delegated OU Admin authority, typically the unit's IT Professional.

    Zoom Specific considerations:

Fill out the "New Object - User" window using the following Zoom specific guidelines:
    • First name, and Last name are the first and last name fields in the Zoom profile. By default, the two fields will be concatenated the create the Zoom display name.  Please set this accordingly.
    • Choose Zoom email address.  This will be the username and email for your Zoom account.
      • The mail attribute is mapped to the email address in Zoom.
      • When you first create a user object in AD, you are given the opportunity to enter the User Logon name.  The first blank shown below will become the account's mail attribute and therefore will be the Zoom account's email address.  HOWEVER, the domain you select here (ad.uillinois.edu or illinois.edu) WILL NOT AFFECT the domain of the email address.  By default all accounts will get the mx.uillinois.edu email address by default.  The domain you select here WILL AFFECT the username used to login to the account.  If you want an illinois.edu email address, and you understand the responsiblities of managing one, please see option C below.

More information about how to create a user object in AD can be found here: Active Directory, How to create an AD Account In Department OU

  2. Mail enable account

Send an email to exchange@illinois.edu requesting to mail enable the new account.
  3. Log in to illinois.zoom.us

You have now completed the setup of a resource account that will allow you to access UIUC Zoom.

  4. (optional) Licensing: After the account is created, enabled, you have logged into illinois.zoom.us (described above), please submit a ticket to consult@illinois.edu or by calling 217-244-7000 requesting the account be upgraded to Licensed. Include the User Logon Name created for the account and ask that it be escalated to Zoom Tier 3.

Option C: netid@illinois.edu Zoom account

Note: This option requires the most lead time and maintenance/management by the IT Pro in the long term.  Please only use this option if the account needs a public facing email address for an extended period of time or you have strong reliance on a 3rd party integration that requires a standalone mailbox/calendar.  This is not a reasonable solution for short term or temporary accounts, or when there are solutions available falling under the options listed above.

Result:

  • The steps below will result in the email address for your Zoom account being set to: netid@illinois.edu

If you would like a new Exchange account and Outlook calendar created, with an illinois.edu domain please complete the steps below:
