Zoom, Accessibility, Issue with new simplified consent notifications

This article details a newly discovered accessibility issue with the simplified consent notifications released with Zoom desktop client version 5.17.1

Description of Issue

With the release of Zoom desktop client 5.17.1, Zoom consolidated meeting consent notifications at the top of the meeting window. This new implementation has caused some users to experience issues reaching the OK button or replaying the message.  For more information about the new consent notification change, please visit this page:

https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb&sysparm_article=KB0059819Though testing has shown that screen readers can find and relay the consent message when it comes up initially, they struggle to find the OK button or the message to repeat it. As a result, screen reader users may find it difficult to consent (by selecting OK), restricting their ability to easily unmute, turn on video or access other in meeting features. This has been tested and confirmed to occur on Windows 10 running Zoom 5.17.1 or newer, with both the latest versions of NVDA and Jaws.

Recommended Workaround

Zoom's recommended workaround is to press the F6 key to manually move focus into the consent dialog. Once in the dialog you should be able to press the TAB key to reach the “OK” button to acknowledge the consent dialog.

Planned Fix

Zoom has shared with us that this issue will be resolved with the release of a fix in their newest client update in February.
