Illinois Compass2g, File Upload and Storage Limits
Does Compass 2g have a maximum capacity for creating pages or uploading files?
Redirecting....
Beginning March 1, 2021, term, a per file upload limit of 100MB will be placed on ALL uploads to Illinois Compass. Students will retain a 1GB storage space with no limit being placed on an individual course.
What does this mean?
Individual file uploads to the Illinois Compass environment by Instructors, Students, etc., will be limited to 100MB per file.
Why is this happening?
While it's been building for a while, the recent move to primarily online learning delivery has significantly increased our hosting costs related to transmission and storage of this content.
What about content that already exists in my course?
Existing content will NOT be affected by this policy change.
What will happen if I attempt to upload a "too large" file?
Unfortunately the message you receive will not be verbose. You may experience one of these results/behaviors:
- Failed to save Content Item. Please try again.
- Bad Gateway. The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
- The content file may simply not attach within your course or individual submission.
What can I use instead?
Several services are offered by the University that are engineered and architected to handle these types of larger files:
- Illinois Mediaspace (Kaltura)
- U of I Box
Instructors are encouraged to upload these files to their Box account and link to them directly, or use the Kaltura tool to store and display videos within Illinois Compass or embed code if stored on another system. Your department may have a solution available to you as well, and you're encouraged to check with your local IT support if necessary.
