Kaltura, Making a Video Public
How do I make a video public? I have it in a channel but I want the public to see it without being prompted for a password.
When a video asset is published in a channel, the content is always password protected. To make media publicly visible, here are your options, assuming you are the owner of the media.
- You can set the video to be Unlisted (Actions, Publish...) and then send the direct link to the video to someone or publish the link. This option works well for viewers outside the University. However, if you have also published the video in a channel, this will not be an option for you. If you wish to share a link as Unlisted AND have the video in a private channel, you may wish to make a duplicate entry of the video and send the Unlisted link out.
- If you are a faculty or staff member, you have the option to publish to a public Gallery. Galleries are the video categories visible at https://mediaspace.illinois.edu/ without logging in. Some galleries are moderated, so unless you are a manager of the gallery it will need to be approved before being published. Typically a unit's communication staff member has control of the gallery. Students do not have the option to publish directly to a gallery. Contact the Technology Services helpdesk if you need assistance.
- You can publish the media to a public channel (For details, see: Kaltura, Public channels ). This functions like a public gallery, but does not appear in the menus at the top of the page in mediaspace.illinois.edu.
- If you are a student and need to publish your video to a public gallery, contact the owner of a gallery and talk to them about your need to publicly publish the entry. You may add the manager's netid as a "Co-Publisher" (Actions, Edit, Collaboration), which will allow them to review and publish the media entry for you. Contact the Technology Services helpdesk if you need assistance.
Note: It is possible that a link to an unlisted video will be shared. You should consider issues of privacy (including FERPA) when you share links or make videos public. (https://www.vpaa.uillinois.edu/resources/web_privacy ).
