Endpoint Services, MECM, Create a self-service, interactive software deployment

Overview

This article provides information for creating a self-service, interactive installer in MECM.

Systems

Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM)

Intended Audience

University of Illinois IT Pros leveraging MECM, hosted by Technology Services' Endpoint Services team

Instructions

  • Navigate to the Computer Agent section in Custom Client Device Settings:
    • For ‘Install permissions’, select ‘All Users’
      • 'All Users' is recommended; end-users will only be able to install what is published to Software Center by the IT Pro

  • Under the User Experience tab of the application’s deployment type, select the following:
    • Installation behavior: Install for system
    • Logon requirement: Only when a user is logged on
    • Installation program visibility: Normal
    • Select checkbox: Allow users to view and interact with the program installation

  • Under the Programs tab of the application’s deployment type:
    • Only listing the setup executable for the ‘installation program’ path is typically enough
    • Some setup executables launch child processes and require additional flags to keep the parent process open
      • For example, InstallShield may require ‘setup.exe /sms’
