Microsoft 365 Sharing Links
What is happening?
What does it mean?
Links for sharing files and folders will now default to "People you choose" instead of "People in University of Illinois - Urbana". With this type of sharing link, you can share with people inside and outside of the organization by specifying their name, group, or email address. In this context, accounts inside the organization are those in the Urbana campus directory. Generally, those accounts that end with @illinois.edu or @uillinois.edu. Accounts in the Chicago or Springfield campus directories are considered outside of our organization.
The default action for sharing links will be "Can view" instead of "Can edit", and you will have the option to specify an expiration date for the link.
Those other options will remain available to users, but by changing the default settings we expect to limit the amount of inadvertent file sharing. To access the sharing link options, you will need to click on the "Link settings" button.
Additionally, the "Anyone with the link" links will now require an expiration date. You can change the expiration date for the link, but it cannot be extended more than 90 days. There's also an option to include a password with anyone links. Once the links expire, new links would need to be recreated by the file owner and redistributed.
