Networking, Iris Scenarios: Naming Ports
Naming conventions
A port's number is automatically assigned; however, it can be useful to assign a human-meaningful name to a port as well. Some common uses and patterns for port names include:
- Special indicators such as ^^ at the beginning of the name
(meaning that the port is used as an uplink to another switch)
- The number of the wall jack connected to the port
(for example, HAP01-45)
- The room number where the wall jack is located
(for example, 101A)
- A combination of the above
(for example, HAP01-45/101A to indicate port HAP01-45 in room 101A)
Using tool tips to speed navigation
Any link with a tool tip that says "Edit port information" will take you to a screen where you can manage that port. For more information about tool tips, see the Search and Sort scenario.
You can also select a range of ports to name by clicking on the checkboxes in the first column of a Port Status Overview page (shown here).
After selecting a group of ports, click the Change Settings tab. You will be taken to an Edit Port Settings page containing all of the selected ports (shown here).
The Edit Port Settings page
Although most of the options on the Edit Port Settings page must be entered through a menu of selections, the Port Name field is a text entry box. You can create and assign a port name that is meaningful to you.
Clicking the Commit Changes button will begin the renaming process. You may need to wait a few moments while processing takes place before a success or failure message is returned.
