Email, Encryption of email messages
This page describes encryption methods currently available for University email.
Email is NOT designed to be a secure message exchange. That said, we have enabled the following features to help make it more secure:
- The campus email relays are configured for "opportunistic TLS". Inbound and outbound email is received and sent via an encrypted path if the connecting server supports a TLS connection; otherwise the email is sent/received in the default "in the clear" or ASCII mode.
- The campus Exchange servers connect to the campus relays via TLS by default.
- Outlook can be configured to encrypt your outbound email. While instructions are available online and can be used to set up encryption for your email, Technology Services is only able to provide best-effort support for setting up encryption.
- Privacy and Information Security is looking at encryption products that may serve as a possible campus solution.
