Canvas@Illinois, Reset groups after importing course content

After you import content from a previous semester, all group assignments and discussions will be assigned to a single, default group set called "Project Groups." You may need to recreate your group set(s) and reconnect the group set(s) to discussions and assignments.

When you import course content that previously used groups, the original group set(s) are removed and instead default to a single “Project Groups” group set. You need to recreate the groups, or potentially create additional group sets depending on your course needs (if, for example, your course includes both discussion group sets as well as separate project group sets). The sections below walk you through what’s needed depending on the number of group sets in your course.

Alternatively, if you want to avoid having to reset your group sets/assignments each time you copy your course, you could enable the feature option to "Preserve Group Set During Assignment or Discussion Copy."

One group set

If your course included only one group set, it’s easiest to rename “Project Groups” to the desired name.

  1. Rename the imported group set. By renaming this group set, any groups created within this set will automatically be connected to any pre-existing group assignments or group discussions. See the How do I edit or delete a group set in a course guide.

  2. Set up the groups within the group set.

Two or more group sets

If your course includes multiple group sets, you need to: recreate your group sets, recreate the groups within the group sets, and reconnect your assignments and discussions to the correct group set.

  1. Rename the imported "Project Groups" group set. By renaming this group set, any groups created within this set will automatically be connected to any pre-existing group assignments or group discussions.
  2. Create any additional group sets that are needed for your course. At this stage, you may create the groups within your group set(s) but it is not required.
  3. Edit each group assignment and/or group discussion to be associated with the correct group set.

Alternative: Enable the "Preserve Group Set During Course Copy" feature option

This feature option must be enabled in the course you're trying to copy from before performing the course copy. Once enabled, your group sets should copy over with each new semester (so you would not need to reconnect the correct group set with each discussion and assignment). However, you will still need to create the groups within the group set(s) before your course starts!

  1. In the course with the content you're trying to copy from, select Settings in your Course Navigation Menu.

  2. Select the Feature Options tab.

  3. To the right of the "Preserve Group Set During Assignment or Discussion Copy," select the red x with a circle around it and then choose Enabled from the drop down menu.
Orange boxes highlighting the red "x" to and the "enabled" option in the drop down menu to turn on the Preserve Group Set During Assignment or Discussion Copy option

  4. Once you see the green check mark, you can proceed with Canvas@Illinois, Copying content from one course to another.

  5. Once the import is complete, you must remember to create your groups within the group set(s) before your course begins:
