How do I require Respondus Monitor for student testing?

Respondus Monitor® builds upon the power of LockDown Browser, using a student’s webcam and industry-leading video analytics to prevent cheating during non-proctored exams.

Preparation Steps

1. Make sure to let the student know you are planning to use Respondus Monitor in your course syllabus. Respondus provides a sample syllabus statement you may want to include or modify.

2. Practice using Respondus yourself. Use the course work.cont.summer2020.student and click on Test Respondus from the left side menu.

3. Ask students to do a short quiz using Respondus before the drop/add date - This will give students an opportunity to try it, and make an informed decision about taking the class.  It will also give students the opportunity to talk with their faculty if they have questions on Respondus or need accommodations.

4. Plan for any contingency. When an alternative solution is requested, you can use the UIC Testing Center can be an alternative for Chicago area students who cannot use Respondus Monitor.  Students have to fill out the “proctor request form” on the center’s website and pay $25 to use the center. You can also consult the Disability Resource Center for any request of accessibility.

  1. In the Control Panel, click on Course Tools > Respondus LockDown Browser.

  5. Click on Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.
  6. Click on Require Respondus Monitor for this exam

    Click Lockdown and Monitor options
  7. Check off the necessary settings you desire
  8. Click Save + close

In Original Course View, if a student tries use a regular browser to access a test that has Respondus enabled, Blackboard will notify them that they need to download and use Respondus to access the test.  For more information, see the
Instructor Quick Start Guide.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • Once you have enabled Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor on a test, do not change the name of the test, or Respondus will not work correctly.
  • If you want to set a password for the test, do so via the Respondus LockDown Browser settings and not the Test Settings. Respondus uses the password field to prevent students from taking the test from another browser, and modifying the password in Test Settings will prevent it from working correctly.

For Ultra Course View

As you are creating a test in your course, you can access the Respondus LockDown Browser (and Monitor) dashboard by clicking the settings in the right panel of the test builder. In Ultra Course View, if a student tries to use a regular browser to access a test that has Respondus enabled, Blackboard will display a button to open the assessment in Respondus LockDown Browser. When students click the button, Respondus will either prompt students to install the browser (if it is not yet installed), or it will open the Respondus LockDown Browser, automatically log the student in to Blackboard, and present the test. For more information, see the Ultra Instructor Quick Start Guide.
