Canvas@Illinois, Suppressing your profile picture for Instructors

Profile pictures are automatically uploaded from the university's iCard repository into Canvas once a semester, typically following the 10th day after classes begin. A global announcement will appear in Canvas prior to the upload. The images are uploaded to profiles as a way for students and instructors to associate a name with a face in their class.

Change your profile picture

If you would like to change your Canvas profile picture to a picture of your choice OR a grey anonymous icon, you can follow the instructions on this Knowledge Base article: Canvas@Illinois , How to Upload a Profile Picture for Students Your selected image will remain even in future semesters when iCard images are uploaded again. If you do not want your iCard image displayed to your students, changing your profile picture to another preferred image is generally recommended rather than suppressing your information as it will affect other systems (see the section below).

Suppressing your image

If you do not want your iCard picture used as your profile picture now or in the future, you will have to submit a request to suppress your Directory information. The process to submit a request follows below. Note: Please recognize that there are a few disadvantages to suppressing your information:

• You can't choose which information you want to make private. It is either all private, or all public. In other words, you cannot suppress ONLY your address and phone number.
  
  
• You will not be able to use the Space Request Application (SRA) to request your Canvas course sites. Instead, you'll need to contact Technology Services so the Canvas Support team can request the course site on your behalf.
  
  
• Third parties such as prospective employers and insurance companies will not be able to verify your employment by themselves. You will have to provide them with documentation.
  
  
• You will not be able to order or download software from the Technology Services WebStore because the software needs to recognize you as a staff member.

Instructors who wish to suppress their image from use in Canvas are advised to contact their department Human Resources office. If, for some reason, the department Human Resources office is unable to assist, instructors should contact the Systems Human Resources office at systemhrservices@uillinois.edu or by phone at 217-333-2600. Unsuppressing Your Image

Instructors who had their home phone number and address suppressed in the Electronic Directory and who now wish to unsuppress it should begin the process by contacting their department Human Resources office.
