If you purchase a ChatGPT credit subscription (such as 200 credits per week) and later find that you need additional credits, you can upgrade to a higher credit tier.

How Subscription Upgrades Work

Credit subscription upgrades are processed manually and include the following steps:

  • Unused Credit Refund
    Any unused portion of your current subscription is partially refunded.

  • Pro‑Rated Upgrade
    The refunded amount is applied toward the cost of your new, higher credit tier.

  • Account Update
    Once the upgrade is completed, your account is moved to the new credit tier and the additional credits become available for use.

Important Information

  • Subscription upgrades are not automatic and must be requested.

  • Credit adjustments and upgrades are currently handled manually.

  • At this time, credit balances cannot be viewed directly within your account.

Update: ChatGPT Codex Credits (Effective March 26, 2026)

As of March 26, 2026, ChatGPT Codex rate limits have been increased.
This means:

  • You can use ChatGPT Codex without consuming credits.

  • This credit‑free usage is available through May 31, 2026.

  • Rate limits still apply, even though credits are not being consumed.
