Chrome Remote Desktop on macOS – Setup and Usage Guide

This article explains how to install, configure, and use Chrome Remote Desktop on a Mac. Chrome Remote Desktop allows you to securely access a Mac remotely using a Google account and Google Chrome.

Requirements

Before beginning, ensure the following:

  • Google Chrome is installed
  • You have a Google account
  • The Mac is connected to the internet

Install and Configure Chrome Remote Desktop Host on Mac

Step 1 – Open Chrome Remote Desktop

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Go to: https://remotedesktop.google.com/
  3. Sign in with your Google account

Step 2 – Install the Chrome Remote Desktop Extension

  1. Under Set up remote access, click Download
  2. When the Chrome Web Store opens:
    • Click Add to Chrome
    • Click Add Extension

Step 3 – Install Chrome Remote Desktop Host

  1. Click Accept & Install
  2. Open the downloaded .dmg file
  3. Open the installer package inside the .dmg file
  4. Follow the installation prompts

Step 4 – Enable macOS Permissions

Enable Accessibility Permissions
  1. Open System Settings
  2. Navigate to:
    • Privacy & Security → Accessibility
  3. Enable:
    • ChromeRemoteDesktopHost
Enable Screen Recording Permissions
  1. Navigate to:
    • Privacy & Security → Screen Recording
  2. Enable:
    • ChromeRemoteDesktopHost
Restart Google Chrome
  1. Close Google Chrome completely
  2. Reopen Google Chrome

Step 5 – Configure the Mac

  1. Enter a computer name
    • Example: CVM-tag or P-tag
  2. Click Next

Step 6 – Create a PIN

  1. Enter a PIN with at least 6 numbers
  2. Confirm the PIN
  3. Click Start

The Mac is now configured for remote access.

Connect to the Mac Remotely

Step 1 – Open Chrome Remote Desktop

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Go to:
  3. Sign in with the same Google account used to configure the Mac

Step 2 – Connect to the Remote Mac

  1. Under Remote Devices, select the Mac you want to access
  2. Enter the PIN configured during setup
  3. Click Connect

The remote desktop session will open in a new tab or window.

Step 3 – Disconnect from the Session

To disconnect:

  • Close the remote desktop browser tab/window
    OR
  • Click Disconnect

Optional Features

File Transfer

During a remote session:

  1. Open the right-side toolbar
  2. Select:
    • Upload File
    • Download File

Multi-Monitor Support

  1. Open the side toolbar during the session
  2. Select Display
  3. Choose the monitor you want to view

Troubleshooting

Remote Mac Shows Offline

  • Verify the Mac is powered on
  • Verify internet connectivity
  • Restart Google Chrome
  • Restart the Mac if necessary

Black Screen During Remote Session

  1. Open:
    • System Settings → Privacy & Security
  2. Verify:
    • Screen Recording permissions are enabled for Chrome Remote Desktop
  3. Restart Google Chrome
  4. Restart the Mac if needed

Permissions Not Working

  1. Open:
    • System Settings → Privacy & Security
  2. Verify:
    • Accessibility permissions are enabled
    • Screen Recording permissions are enabled
  3. Restart the Mac

Security Recommendations

  • Use a strong Google account password
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA)
  • Do not share your PIN
  • Disconnect when finished
  • Regularly review and remove unused devices from Chrome Remote Desktop
