Remote to your work computer from home
The following article explains how to prepare your work computer for connection and how to setup a personal computer with VPN.
Windows 10 Instructions (Connecting Windows to Windows)
Preparing your work Windows PC
- In the Search the web and Windows box, type remote desktop
- In the search results, select Allow remote access to your computer.
- Under the Remote Desktop section, choose the appropriate option (e.g. Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop.)
- Click on the Select Users button.
- You may see that your account already has access. If it doesn't you may need to add an account.
- Select Add
- Type in your NetID.
- Select OK - If you get an error that you do not have permissions to add your NetID please email your PCs property tag number along with a brief note to IT@vetmed.illinois.edu. We will do the addition for you.
- Select OK to close open dialogue windows.
- Write down the property tag from the sticker physically located on your computer (Typically P10Fxxxx, you will need this at home.)
Note: Ensure that you leave your work computer turned on. We recommend you log off before you leave but do not shutdown. If you are remoting into a laptop be it is on the dock and/or plugged into the power supply and network. (Vet Med Windows computers are set to never sleep unless on battery.)

Connecting to the Work Windows PC from your remote Windows PC
- Connect to the VPN. (You cannot remote into your work PC unless you are connected to the VPN)
- In the Search the web and Windows box, type remote desktop
- In the search results, select Remote Desktop
- Type in cvm-P10Fxxxxx.ad.uillinois.edu (Enter the property tag number from your work PC)
- Enter your credentials: uofi\xxxx and your NetID password. Example: uofi\tinab
Apple Mac Instructions (Connecting Mac to Mac)

- Open System Preferences
- Double-click Sharing
- Turn Screen Sharing on within the Sharing window
- On the right side of the Sharing window, ensure that Only these users is selected and Administrators is in the list.

Connecting to the Work Mac PC from your home Mac PC
- Connect to the VPN
Connecting to remote:
- Open Screen Sharing (cmd + spacebar, then type screen sharing)
- Type in the computer you want to connect to. CVM-P10Fxxxxxx.ad.uillinois.edu
- Enter your NetID/Password

Connecting to the Work PC from your Mac Home PC
- Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop via Go - Applications (this must be Microsoft Remote Desktop version 10 or higher. Visit the App store and down/install it if you do not have it.)
- At PC Name, type in the computer you want to connect to. CVM-P10Fxxxxxx.ad.uillinois.edu
- For User Account enter your NetID/Password, add and connect (You can save this connection for future use)
Note: If prompted about a certificate please Continue.
