Google Apps @ Illinois, Ineligible Account Deactivations
Read-Only and Deactivation
On July 19, 2024, accounts with no active Illinois affiliation on file had their storage quota reduced to zero, rendering their contents read-only. Gmail inboxes could no longer send or receive messages, and Google Drive would not allow new uploads.
On September 19, two months later, these accounts were fully deactivated, preventing users from logging in to them at all.
During this time period, extensions were given to users who requested them.
On October 21, one month following deactivation, data associated with these deactivated Google profiles werepermanently and irrecoverably purged.
This process will be repeated regularly in future semesters, to ensure that only faculty, staff, students, and other active affiliates are using Google Apps @ Illinois.
Next Steps
Email Redirection
Though mailboxes and the ability to send emails cannot be provided, alumni are able to indefinitely receive messages sent to their @illinois.edu address via the email redirection service.
Simply log in to the Electronic Directory Editor and change the mail field to the non-Illinois email address you'd like to have messages land in. If you have any trouble doing this, reach out to the Help Desk.
The Campus Email Relays team provides more information about doing this here: Email, How to set up email forwarding
Getting Help
If you have any questions about the Google Apps deactivation process or next steps that might be available to you, contact the Technology Services Help Desk by email at consult@illinois.edu or by phone at 217-244-7000. The Help Desk can determine your account's status and eligibility, and may be able to work with the Google Apps team to provide a temporary extension.
