Using Accredible LTI 1.3 in Canvas and Protecting Module Access

Overview

Accredible is a credentialing platform that integrates with Canvas via LTI 1.3. This integration allows instructors to issue digital certificates and badges to students upon completion of specific course requirements. This article explains:

  • How to configure the Accredible module item.
  • How to protect the Accredible credential issuing link from premature student access using Canvas module requirements and prerequisites.

Please note that only Accredible team members can configure Accredible module items within Canvas. If you are a faculty member for a course and you'd like to use Accredible within Canvas, please contact your unit's eLearning staff or consult@illinois.edu

Add Accredible to a Course Module

  1. Go to your course in Canvas.
  2. Navigate to Modules.
  3. Click + to add a new item.
  4. Select External Tool.
  5. Choose Accredible from the list.
  6. Click Add Item and then Publish when ready.
  7. When the item is published, click on it to configure. If it prompts you to log in, do so (contact consult@illinois.edu if you are not already a team member), and then refresh the page.
  8. Select your Accredible group from the drop-down list.
  9. Once this is configured, if students can click the module link, they are issued a credential, regardless of whether they have completed any course material. This is why it is important to protect the module link using one or both methods below.

Protect Accredible Credential Issuing Link from Premature Access

Students should only access the Accredible link after completing required activities. To enforce this:

Option A: Use Module Requirements

  1. In the module containing Accredible:
    • Click the three-dot menu > Edit.
  2. Under Requirements, select:
    • Students must complete all items (or specific items).
  3. Ensure Accredible is last in the module so students complete prior tasks first.

Option B: Use Module Prerequisites

  1. Create a previous module with required activities (e.g., quizzes, assignments).
  2. In the module containing Accredible:
    • Click Edit.
    • Under Prerequisites, select the previous module.
  3. This ensures students cannot access the Accredible module until the prerequisite module is complete.

Best Practices

  • Keep Accredible unpublished until all setup is complete.
  • Communicate clearly to students about credential issuance timing.
  • Test the flow using Student View before publishing.

Troubleshooting

  • If students report access issues, verify:
    • Module requirements are correctly set.
    • Accredible module item is published.
  • If you encounter errors, please ensure that you have been granted team member permissions. Additionally, refresh the page. Finally, if you see a configuration error, it's most likely due to a purposeful ommision of an optional feature that violates FERPA, and can be ignored. You should still be able to select the appropriate group from the drop-down menu at the top. If you still have problems, please contact consult@illinois.edu
