Canvas@Illinois, Enabling ProctorU Record+ on Exams in Canvas

ProctorU’s Record+ is an automated proctoring service that allows undergraduate students to take exams online through Canvas without an instructor present by using Guardian browser.

Update for Spring 2026: The previous ProctorU Record+ integration in Canvas and Moodle LTI courses has been replaced with a new version which changes the process for enabling it on an exam. There are now separate instructions for both Canvas and Moodle LTI courses. Please contact CITL for assistance.

Secure your Exams with Record+

ProctorU’s Record+ is an automated proctoring service that allows undergraduate students to take exams online through Canvas without an instructor present by using Guardian browser. This service authenticates their identity as well as monitors and records their computer screen and their webcam’s microphone and video input. It manages certain behaviors during an exam and reports back to you on others so that you can review the recordings to look for any policy violations. There is no fee for students to use Record+, and they do not make an appointment to take an exam that uses it. Please note that some programs, placement tests or courses (particularly for graduate students) may use other platforms, such as Live+ or Review+, which work differently. These instructions do not apply to those.

Get Started with Record+

  • Please contact CITL or for assistance or to schedule a consultation or follow the steps below.
  • Record+ is available for both Classic and New Quizzes in Canvas and Quizzes in Moodle LTI courses. Setup is different in Moodle LTI courses.
  • When working with Record+ in Canvas, please use Chrome with third-party cookies enabled, and do not use an incognito browser.

Submit DRES Accommodation Requests

If any students need extended test-taking time, you can accommodate them in Canvas by using the Moderate Quiz button, which only appears after the exam is published. First, the student(s) must create their ProctorU account by pressing the ProctorU Platform button. Then you must add the name(s) of the student(s) into ProctorU’s system at least 24 hours in advance, either by using the Accommodations web form or the ProctorU Platform dashboard in your course. Do this for every student who needs extended time or other accommodations, such as a screen-reader or special equipment. To submit multiple test-takers in bulk, download and use the CSV template provided via the web form.

Add the ProctorU Platform External Tool Link

You must add the ProctorU Platform tool link to the course navigation menu in Canvas. When doing this, use Chrome with third-party cookies enabled and do not use an incognito browser. Both you and your students will use this tool to link your Canvas account to your ProctorU account, as well as to create a ProctorU account if you do not already have one.

In Canvas, there may already be a ProctorU Platform button in the left-hand course navigation menu. If you don’t see it, then you must enable it for you and students. To do so, press the Settings button in the course navigation menu. Press the Navigation tab at the top of the page. Scroll down to ProctorU Platform, press the options button to the right of it, choose Enable and then save that change.

Create a ProctorU Account

If you do not already have a ProctorU account, you must create one by pressing the ProctorU Platform button you added above. If prompted, be sure to choose the Instructor option.

Configure the Exam Settings in Canvas

Before you can enable ProctorU on an exam, the exam must have the following attributes:

  • Navigate to the quiz in Canvas using Chrome, open it and press the Edit button.
  • There must be an access code. You should never share it with students; otherwise, they may access the exam without engaging ProctorU, and they will not be recorded.
  • There must be a timer set to a 15-minute increment: X:00, X:15, X:30 or X:45. It must end in 00, 15, 30 or 45.
  • All 3 date availability fields (due date, available from, available until) must be used and set in 15-minute increments. It must be at least 60 minutes or longer. In Canvas, since you cannot use 12 AM as the “due” or “available until” date, we recommend 11:45 PM to replace 11:59 PM.

Enable Record+ on an Exam with the ProctorU Platform Wizard

Follow the steps below or watch this video on Enabling an Exam in Canvas (video).

  • Use Chrome with third-party cookies enabled and do not use an incognito browser.
  • To enable Record+ on an exam, press the ProctorU Platform button in the course navigation menu in Canvas. This will link your account to your ProctorU. Choose Instructor if prompted.
  • You may also be prompted to authorize the link to ProctorU.
  • Next use the ProctorU LTI wizard to access any quiz item (Classic, New, Graded or Practice) to enable ProctorU on it or to revise or resync any exams that were already set up to be proctored.
  • If the quiz meets the requirements listed above, you can then enable the use of Record+ and configure the setting options below. Press the button Configure Exam to be Proctored.
    • If you later edit any exam settings in Canvas (the access code, timer, date availability or description), you must return here and re-sync the exam under the Proctored tab.
    • If you ever break any of the required parameters in the exam settings (i.e., remove the access code or timer or set the timer or date availability outside of the specified 15-minute increments), these changes are not automatically applied to the exam in ProctorU, and any attempt to re-sync the exam will be prevented.
    • You can deactivate the exam here later if you decide not to use Record+.
  • During the following steps you will see many grey boxes that are locked and cannot be edited.
  • For exam Editors, add anyone who should be able to edit it in Canvas or view it at proctoru.com.
  • For Department choose Default.
  • For Term select the appropriate term (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer).
  • Exam Security Settings
    • Allow Copy Text and Image: Enabled or Disabled. (We recommend Disabled unless you need students to copy/paste text. Enabled prevents use of copy/paste and system clipboard and enables macOS Content Protection to prevent screen capture.)
    • Allow Use of Browser Tabs: Allow or Restricted. (Restricted only allows access to the exam. Whitelisting a URL allows for new tabs that go only to the specified URLs. Only use Allow if students should be able to go to any website.)
    • Set Exam Window Size: Resized, Maximized or Full Screen. (Choose Resized if students need access to other computer application. Maximized gives access to the OS taskbar and system menus. The most restrictive option is Full Screen.)
    • Third Party Application Use: Allowed or Restricted. (If students need access to other computer applications, choose Allowed.)
  • Ignore the page about the Exam Window as content there is locked.
  • For Allowances either leave it set to none or choose Allow Selected Options to designate any allowed resources. These settings do not prevent students from using them, but Record+ should create flags and send incident reports if students don’t follow the guidelines you select.
    • Whitelisted URLs: include the URL of any websites that the students should have access to. Students will not be able to access other websites, including the course Canvas site, unless you do. Whitelisted URLs will open in a new tab.
    • Other Resources: Include any whitelisted URLs here, too, and enter any resources that were not listed above as available options.
  • For Notifications, add anyone who should receive emailed incident reports.

Visit the ProctorU Website

  • After setting up the exam and enabling Record+, you can review your exam in the ProctorU website, but you do not need to go there unless you want to view recordings after the exam.
  • You can view a list of who took the exam and view logs and recordings of every session.

Find Answers to Common Questions and Concerns

  • Student sessions will be recorded and saved into the ProctorU system. These will be deleted after one year. Read more about how ProctorU uses test-taker data.
  • When a student begins the exam, the ProctorU system will automatically and secretly inject the password on the student’s behalf. The students will never see it and should not know it.
  • Do not issue the access code (password) to students. If they have it, then they are able to take the exam without using ProctorU and without being recorded or monitored.
  • You cannot test the exam in Guardian browser as yourself or by using the Test Student in Canvas because you need to have a valid, linked ProctorU student account to take an exam using ProctorU. If you know the password, you can bypass ProctorU to test the exam in a different browser by manually entering the password.
  • If you look at your exam in the ProctorU system, under the Type column, Record+ exams should be listed as Auto. If it is not, please contact CITL.
  • Human proctors review all the automated recordings and flags. They create a timeline of flags and generate any reports. These are emailed to you within a couple days to alert you to any incidents you may want to review.
  • After enabling Record+ you may receive an automated email asking you to review the exam. You can ignore that message or simply review the settings you chose in Canvas. You do not need to visit the ProctorU website or change anything there.
