ClassTech, Troubleshooting, Laptop Display (HDMI & VGA)

Troubleshooting steps for laptop connection issues in general assignment classrooms. Please note in newer and upgraded rooms HDMI and wireless presentation are available. VGA and Auxiliary Inputs are being retired from service.

Before trying any other steps, ensure that the system is on by pressing Display On on the control panel or Start with Audio and Video on a touchscreen. Wait 30-90 seconds for the Display On button to stop blinking, or the touch panel to stop counting down. If you have not done so already, restart the system.

Ensure that the system is set up correctly:

  • Ensure that the Picture Mute button on the touch panel or control panel is turned off;
  • Ensure that you are on the correct source. These should be labelled on the control panel and may say "HDMI", "Laptop", or "VGA". Please note, "PC" refers to the PC in the room;
  • Try selecting a different source (such as "DVD") and switching back to laptop/HDMI/VGA.

Next check the physical connections:

  • Make sure the cable is securely connected to both your laptop (or adapter - needs to be HDCP 2.2 compliant) and the lectern (if visible);
  • Unplug the cable (or adapter) from your laptop and plug it back in to refresh the connection;
  • If using the VGA cable, ensure that the cable is plugged in to the Input port, not the Monitor one. Not all rooms have a monitor port and this does not apply to rooms where the cable runs in to the cabinet.

Finally, check your laptop's display settings:

Windows 7, 8, 10, 11

  • Press and hold the Windows key, then press the P key to cycle through the projection settings. Ensure the display is set to Extend and the content for display has been dragged to the extended monitor.

MacOS Sonoma (Version 14)

  • Click on the Apple menu
  • Go to System Settings
  • Then click Displays  in the sidebar.
    • You may need to scroll down.
  • Your Macbook is the "Built-in Display" and the 2nd monitor that you are connected to will appear besides it
    • The name of the 2nd monitor will be listed underneath it - example: DELL P2419H
  • Select the arrow toggle icon to the left of Use as
    • By default, the "Built-in Display" is set as the Main Display
    • The 2nd monitor is considered the Extended Display
      • This can be changed by selecting which of the two screens you want as the primary (Main Display) and the secondary (Extended Display)
