University Bursar - How do I claim tuition fees on my taxes if I am Canadian?

Canadian students will need to request tax form TL11A or TL11D. The tax form will be emailed to the student’s official University of Illinois System email address within 7-10 business days.

Canadian Tax Form TL11a

Universities outside of Canada certify a student's eligibility for the tuition, education, and textbook amounts on this form. Students show the transfer of tuition, education, and textbook amounts to a designated individual on it. 

  • The University only completes Part 1 of the Certificate.
  • Box A: Each semester that was attended is listed with the year and month for the start and end of the semester.
  • Box B: Lists the number of months of part-time attendance for each semester. A student is considered part-time if they completed less than 12 credits for the fall/spring semester, or less than 6 credits for the summer semester.
  • Box C: Lists the number of months of full-time attendance for each semester. A student is considered full-time if they completed 12 or more credits for the fall/spring semester, 6 or more credits for the summer semester.
  • The amount of total fees paid for the year is noted on the certificate. These fees include the amount paid for tuition and mandatory ancillary fees, which includes the Student Health Service charge.

Canadian Tax Form TL11d

Post-secondary educational institutions outside of Canada use this form to certify a student's tuition fees if the student is a deemed resident of Canada.

  • The University only completes Part 1 of the Certificate.
  • The period of enrollment that was attended is listed with the year, month and day for the start and end of the period.
  • The amount of total fees paid for the year is noted on the certificate. These fees include the amount paid for tuition and mandatory ancillary fees, which includes the Student Health Service charge.

  • If you have graduated or left the University of Illinois and no longer have access to view your student account, please visit the NetID Center to reset your login credentials.
  • RL-8 (Quebec Form) is not processed by the University. It is a Quebec College specific tax form.
